The most bizarre response from Human Rights Watch was the following on January 11, 1999. I was
referred to this person by Mr. Panico without a name, only an email address. The person finally
responded after months of repeatedly sending message after message,
Sir,
Human Rights Watch is a non-governmental organization that relies on donations to fund our research
and reports. As such, are under constant budget constraints that limit what sort of work we can do.
As always, we try to be as balanced and as fair as possible when dealing with any particular issue.
We have taken your comments into account and will continue to monitor the status of the Greeks of
Istanbul.
COMMENT: End of message. Despite assurances "we will continue to monitor" nothing every
happened. Again, "budget constraints" but they have never answered questions as to how they
can go to Greece and publish on the Muslims of Western Thrace.
