October 1996,
Dear Mr. Roth,
Thank you for your letter. I am pleased to support the work Human Rights Watch does around
the world. I am a little confused concerning the letter I sent concerning the recent attempted
bombing of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey. I have enclosed another copy in case you did
not see it for any reason.
I think the work you do around the world is very important. I have copies of the last two world
reports that HRW publishes annually. I think your reports are detailed and well described.
Unfortunately, I have noticed your reports have nothing about Cyprus. Cyprus has returned to the
headlines over the last several months with the shooting deaths of several Greek Cypriots by
Turkish occupation forces. I hope you will investigate these incidents especially reports
that Turkish neo-fascists from the mainland have been making their way into the Turkish
occupied portion of Cyprus.
In conclusion I hope you will follow up your 1992 report, "Denying Human Rights and ethnic
Identity: The Greeks of Turkey". The fate of the Patriarchate and Greek community of Turkey
depend on organizations such as yours taking the proper action. I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank You
Theodore G. Karakostas
