Η ΕΠΙΔΟΣΙΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΥΠΕΛΛΟΥ
ΕΙΣ ΤΟΝ Κ. Γ. ΧΟΡΤΩΝ
Ωραίαν καί Ελληνικωτάτην εορτήν ήγε χθές τό εσπέρας η Πανελλήνιος Ένωσις, μετ’ αυτής δέ καί δι’ αυτής εώρταζεν άπας ο εν Αμερική Ελληνισμός, ο διά τής Ενώσεως εκπροσωπούμενος, καί δι’ αυτής διηρμήνευεν τά αισθήματα αυτού σήμερον. Καίτοι η επίδοσις τού κυπέλλου εις τόν κ. Γεώργιον Χόρτων, ως είχεν αγγελθή, επρόκειτο νά λάβη χώραν σήμερον, η απρόοπτος αλλαγή τής ημέρας καί τό εσπευσμένον δι’ ού εγένετο γνωστόν τούτο εις τήν Ελληνικήν παροικίαν τής Νέας Υόρκης δέν συνετέλεσεν, ή κατ’ ελάχιστον όπως ελαττωθή ο αριθμός τών Ελλήνων, οίτινες έσπευσαν όπως, διά τής παρουσίας των, τιμήσωσι τόν μέγαν φιλέλληνα Αμερικανόν καί παραστώσιν εις τήν τελετήν τής επιδόσεως τού ωραίου καί καλλιτεχνικωτάτου αργυρού κυπέλλου, τού αγορασθέντος δι’ εισφορών τών εν Αμερική Ελλήνων.
Η αίθουσα τής Πανελληνίου Ενώσεως ήτο καταλλήλως κεκοσμημένη δι’ Ελληνικών καί Αμερικανικών σημαιών, εγένετο δέ δεκτός δι’ ενθουσιώδους δεξιώσεως ο κ. Γεώργιος Χόρτων, ότε συνοδευόμενος υπό τού διευθυντού τής «Ατλαντίδος» εισήλθεν εν αυτή.
Ο πρόεδρος τής Ενώσεως κ. Παντιάς Ράλλης, ο αντιπρόεδρος αιδ. Μεθόδιος Κουρκουλής, ο γραμματεύς κ. Γεώργιος Νικολάου, ο ταμίας κ. Α. Γαλανός καί οι εκ τών συμβούλων αξιότιμοι κ.κ. Ι. Κούνες, Μ. Νίκας, Α. Μάρκελλος καί άλλοι υπεδέχθησαν τόν κ. Χόρτων. Ο αιδ. Κουρκουλής, εφημέριος τής εν Νέα Υόρκη Εκκλησίας τής κοινότητος «Η Αγία Τριάς», διά τής γνωστής αυτού ρητορικής δεινότητος καί ευφραδίας εξύμνησε τό μέγα έργον τού κ. Χόρτων, τού ενθέρμου συνηγόρου τών Ελληνικών δικαίων, καί κατέληξε λέγων ότι, φόρον ευγνωμοσύνης αποτίομεν σήμερον πρός τόν σεβαστόν φιλέλληνα προσφέροντες αυτώ, ως ελάχιστον δείγμα τής εκτιμήσεώς μας εις ανάμνησιν τού έργου του, τό υπό τών Ελλήνων τής Αμερικής αγορασθέν κύπελλον.
Μετά τόν αιδ. Μεθόδιον, έλαβε τόν λόγον ο κ. Γεώργιος Νικολάου γραμματεύς τής Ενώσεως, ο μετά τόσης δραστηριότητος καί φιλοπατρίας εργαζόμενος, καί προσφωνών τόν «μέγαν ευεργέτην» τού Ελληνικού γένους κ. Χόρτων δι’ ενθουσιώδους και πλήρους πατριωτικών αισθημάτων προσλαλιάς, επέδωσεν αυτώ τό κύπελλον.
Ο κ. Χόρτων, λίαν συγκεκινημένος, εξέφρασε τάς θερμάς καί εγκαρδίους αυτού ευχαριστίας πρός τούς Έλληνες τής Αμερικής οίτινες «αδελφικώς» υπεδέχθησαν αυτόν από τάς ακτάς τού Ειρηνικού μέχρι τών ακτών τού Ατλαντικού. Ο κ. Χόρτων είπεν ότι εποίησε τ ε σ σ α ρ ά κ ο ν τ α ε π τ ά διαλέξεις εις τάς κυριωτέρας πόλεις τής Αμερικής ενώπιον πολυπληθών πάντοτε ακροατηρίων, περί τών συγχρόνων Ελλήνων τούς οποίους θεωρεί ως «συμπατριώτας του, ως αδελφούς», τούς οποίους εγνώρισεν εκ τού σύνεγγυς κατά τήν εννεατή αυτού εν Ελλάδι διαμονήν καί τών οποίων τάς αρετάς καί τά πλεονεκτήματα πάντοτε εξετίμησεν. Ο κ. Χόρτων εξέφρασε τάς ευχαριστίας αυτού πρός τήν «Ατλαντίδα» καί τόν διευθυντής αυτής, καί κατέληξεν εν μέσω ενθουσιωδών χειροκροτημάτων, ευχηθείς υπέρ τής ευημερίας τής Ελλάδος καί τών εν Αμερική Ελλήνων.
Ο πρόεδρος τής Πανελληνίου Ενώσεως κ. Παντιάς Ράλλης, δι’ ωραίου καί πατριωτικού λόγου διερμήνευσε πρός τόν κ. Χόρτων τά αισθήματα τών εν Αμερική Ελλήνων, οίτινες ευγνωμόνως παρηκολούθησαν τόν ευγενή Αμερικανόν νοερώς καθ’ όλην τήν ανά τήν Συμπολιτείαν περιοδείαν του, καί οίτινες, είπε, πάντοτε θά ενθυμώνται τόν μέγαν φιλέλληνα καί ευγνωμόνως θά αναμεμνήσκωνται τού πολυτίμου αυτού έργου, κατέληξε δέ ο κ. Ράλλης εν μέσω χειροκροτημάτων καί ζητωκραυγών, υπέρ τού κ. Χόρτων καί τής Ενώσεως.
Ο κ. Σ. Ι. Βλαστός, τή προσκλήσει τού κ. Παντιά Ράλλη, έλαβε κατόπιν τόν λόγον, ανακεφαλαιώσας δέ τό μέγα καί πολύτιμον έργον τού κ. Χόρτων, είπεν ότι οι εν Αμερική Έλληνες δικαίως οφείλουσι χάριτας εις αυτόν διότι, διά τών λόγων του καί διά τών διαλέξεών του, κατέστησεν γνωστάς τάς αρετάς τών Ελλήνων εις τούς συμπατριώτας του από τών Δυτικών μέχρι τών Ατλαντικών Πολιτειών. Οι Έλληνες τής Αμερικής, είπε ο διευθυντής τής «Ατλαντίδος», βαθέως εκτιμώντες τάς μεγάλας υπέρ τού Ελληνισμού υπηρεσίας τού κ. Χόρτων, εξέφρασεν τήν γνώμην όπως δοθή αυτώ δώρον τι, εις ανάμνησιν τής φιλελληνικής αυτού εκστρατείας’ καί τή προτάσει τού εν Κληβελάνδη κ. Δημητρακοπούλου εγένετο ο έρανος διά τού οποίου ηγοράσθη τό κύπελλον. Μέγας επίκουρος τού εράνου ήλθεν, ευθύς άμα ως ερρίφθη η ιδέα, ο αιδ. Χ’’Δημητρίου εφημέριος τής εν Ατλάντη κοινότητος, όστις δι’ ωραίας καί πατριωτικής αυτού επιστολής πέμπων τήν εισφοράν του, έθετο πρώτον τήν «πατρίδα καί κατόπιν τήν οικογένειαν». Θά ηδυνάμεθα, είπεν, νά εισπράξωμεν χίλια καί περισσότερα δολλάρια υπέρ αγοράς αναμνηστικού δώρου, ως εγένετο δήλον καί εκ τών εκ Μομπίλ τής Αλαβάμας εισφορών, ληφθεισών χθές’ αλλά δέν επρόκειτο νά δοθή πολύτιμον δώρον, επρόκειτο μόνον περί μιάς απλής επιδείξεως τής ευγνωμοσύνης μας πρός τόν ενθουσιώδη συνήγορον τών Ελληνικών δικαίων, εθεώρησε δέ καλόν καί πρέπον η Διεύθυνσις τής «Ατλαντίδος» όπως διά τής Πανελληνίου Ενώσεως, τής οποίας τόν ακρογωνιαίον λίθον έθετο αυτός ο Χόρτων, επιδοθή αυτώ τό αγορασθέν κύπελλον. Εντόνως κατέκρινεν εκείνους, οίτινες συστηματικώς πολεμούσιν οιονδήποτε πατριωτικόν έργον καί οίτινες δέν δύνανται νά εννοήσουν ότι δύναται νά υπάρξη ειλικρίνεια καί αγνότης αισθημάτων. Η «Ατλαντίς», είπεν, επί δέκα τέσσαρα όλα έτη αγωνίζεται τόν καλόν αγώνα αμυνομένη κατά τών εχθρών τού Ελληνισμού, τών περικυκλούντων τήν Πατρίδα, τό δέ έργον της στέφεται σήμερον υπό επιτυχίας, χάρις εις τήν αυθόρμητον καί ενθουσιώδη υποστήριξιν τών Ελλήνων τής Αμερικής, οίτινες εν τή Πανελληνίω Ενώσει καί τή «Ατλαντίδι» διαβλέπουσι τόν μέγαν ορίζοντα, όστις εκτείνεται επί τόν Ελληνισμόν τής Αμερικής.
Έχομεν καθήκον ιερόν, καθήκον πατριωτικόν, καθήκον Ελληνικόν, νά υποστηρίξωμεν πάση θυσία τήν Πανελλήνιον Ένωσιν, κατέληξε, λέγων ο κ. Βλαστός, θά είμεθα δέ πράγματι άξιοι τής εσχάτης μομφής καί εχθροί ημών αυτών, εάν δέν συνδράμωμεν όλοι ομού εις τήν ανύψωσν, εις τήν επικράτησιν καί ενίσχυσιν αυτής.
Καί ούτω έληξεν η ωραία καί Ελληνική εορτή, εν μέσω ενθουσιωδών ζητωκραυγών υπέρ τού κ. Χόρτων εις τόν οποίον πάντες ηυχήθησαν καλόν κατευόδιον.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE CUP
TO MR. G. HORTON
The Pan-Hellenic Union held a beautiful and most Hellenic festival yesterday evening. For with the Union, and through the Union, all the Hellenic people of America celebrated the one being represented by the Union and with the festival the Union interprets their emotions today. Though the presentation of the cup to Mr. George Horton was to take place today, as it was announced, the unexpected change of the day and the hurriedness in which this became known to the Hellenic colony of New York did not contribute , not even in the least, that the number of Hellenes be reduced, the Hellenes who hurried, with their presence, to honor the great philhellene American, and to take part in the celebration of the presentation of the beautiful and artistically crafted silver cup, bought with donations made by the Hellenes of America.
The hall at the Pan-Hellenic Union was appropriately decorated with Hellenic and American flags, and Mr. George Horton was accepted with an enthusiastic reception when accompanied by the Director of “Atlantis” as he entered into the hall.
The president of the Union, Mr. Pantias Ralles, the vice-president Rev. Methodios Kourkoulis, the secretary Mr. George Nikolaou, the treasurer Mr. A Galanos and the honorable councilors Mr. I. Kounes, M. Nikas, A. Markellos, and others welcomed Mr. Horton. Rev. Koukoules, parish priest of the New York Church of the Community of “Holy Trinity”, with his famous rhetoric and eloquent ability paid praise to the great work of Mr. Horton, the warm advocate of Hellenic rights, and he ended by saying that as a tribute of gratitude we pay today this respectful philhellene, offering to him, as a mere example of our appreciation in remembrance of his work, the cup bought by the Hellenes of America.
After Rev. Methodios, the secretary of the union, Mr. George Nikolaou, who works with such energy and patriotism, spoke addressing Mr. Horton the “great benefactor” of the Hellenic race and with enthusiastic salutations and salutations full of patriotic sentiments, he presented him with the cup.
Mr. Horton, very touched, expressed his warm and heartfelt thanks to the Hellenes of America who “brotherly” welcomed him from the shores of the Pacific to the shores of the Atlantic. Mr. Horton said he has had forty-seven lectures, on the subject of contemporary Greeks (Hellenes) in the most principle cities of America always with crowded audiences, the Hellenes whom he considers his “compatriots, his brothers”, and whom he got to know from his nearly nine year stay in Hellas and whose virtues and talents he always appreciated. Mr. Horton expressed his thanks to “Atlantis” and its Director and ended in the midst of applause wishing both for Hellas’ prosperity and the prosperity of the Hellenes of America.
The president of the Pan-Hellenic Union, Mr. Pantias Ralles, with a beautiful and patriotic speech interpreted the sentiments of the Hellenes in America to Mr. Horton, who with gratitude followed the gentle American mentally throughout his journey over the Confederation, and who, he said, will always remember the great philhellene and gratefully will remember his precious work, and Mr. Ralles ended in the midst of applause and cheers for Mr. Horton and the Union.
Mr. S. I. Vlastos, with an invitation by Mr. Pantia Ralles, was next to give a speech, summing up the great and precious work of Mr. Horton, he said that the Hellenes of America rightly owe him favors because with his speeches and his lectures he rendered the virtues of the Hellenes known to his compatriots from the Western to the Atlantic States. The Hellenes of America, said the Director of “Atlantis”, deeply appreciating Mr. Horton’s great services on behalf of Hellenism, expressed the opinion that a certain gift should be awarded to him, in memory of his philhellenic campaign, and with the proposition of Mr. Demetrakopoulos from Cleveland the collection took place from which the cup was bought. Rev. X Demetriou the parish priest of the Atlanta community came to be an important assistant for the collection immediately once the idea was cast, who with his beautiful and patriotic letters while sending his donation, placed the homeland first and his family second. We will be able, he said, to collect a thousand and more dollars for the sake of souvenir gifts, as it was evident with the collections from those in Mobil Alabama, received yesterday, but it would not be about giving a precious gift, it would only be about a simple display of our gratitude to an enthusiastic advocate of Hellenic rights, The “Atlantis” Management considered it good and proper that through the Pan-Hellenic Union, for which the cornerstone was placed by Horton himself, be presented this purchased cup. He strongly criticized those who systematically fight every patriotic work and who can’t conceive that honesty and purity of feelings can exist. “Atlantis” said, for fourteen years it struggles the good fight against the enemies of Hellenism, the ones encircling the Homeland, its work is being crowned today with success, thanks to the spontaneous and enthusiastic support of the Hellenes of America who in the Pan-Hellenic Union and “Atlantis” see through to the great horizon, which spreads out upon the Hellenes of America.
We have a sacred duty, a patriotic duty, a Hellenic duty to support the Pan-Hellenic Union with every sacrifice, ended Mr. Vlastos, while saying we would be truly worthy of utmost reprimand even from our enemies, if we don’t all together subscribe to the Union’s elevation, its prevalence and its strengthening.
And in this manner the beautiful and Hellenic festival ended in the midst of enthusiastic cheers for the sake of Mr. Horton to whom everyone wished a good voyage.
