E-mail Print PDF

The Holy Church of Saints Theodore

The Holy Church of the Saints Theodore is circa 17th century and was built upon the ruins of an earlier Christian church. Originally the church had been named in honor of St. Theodore the Stratilates (General) and later, when new residents arrived from the town of Bisia, they added the name of another St. Theodore of Tiron (the Recruit). I believe that the opposite had happened. First to be honored was the Saint Theodore of Tiron and later on was added the name of his namesake, St. Theodore the General. It was from this church that the contemporary Corinthian, community received the name of Saints Theodore.

The walls of the church have been built with stones, sculptures, columns and other material which was taken from the very ancient city and the fort of Crommyon, which was located a short distance north of the church. Most of the building materials came from the Christian community which was built on the same place as Crommyon, and which had flourished after the 6th century A.D.
At this location also existed a cemetery, from which comes a tomb-stone (see below).

The church of Saints Theodore, has been the carrier of the long history of the area, which with some small interruptions goes back for 4000 years.

(Constantine Kousoulas)

There is a  stone with an inscription on it, built in the face of the western wall
of the Holy Church of Saints Theodore

" I, Filostrata have gone back to my origins, after
the bonds that kept me attached to life were untied
upon completing my fourteen years and beginning
the fifteen. I left my body, a virgin, childless, unwed,
with morality. To him who desires love for life, I wish
him to have long life and to reach old age."
