As school experience division supervisor and coordinator I was responsible for the development and improvement of the School Experience course, designed to offer theoretical background and practical experience to the undergraduate students of the pre-primary and elementary education program. I also worked for the improvement of curriculum, instruction, and evaluation courses, as well as the methodology of teaching and learning courses. I have introduced and developed syllabi for 4 new subjects in the program. My teaching focused in: school environments and organization, methodology of teaching and learning, school experience, and learning theories. As a faculty member and course coordinator I presented and discussed challenges and possibilities of field experience with other faculty individually and at staff meetings. Furthermore, a number of other responsibilities included the supervision of the design and implementation of lesson plans of prospective pre-primary teachers at local schools, as well as of their methodology of teaching; counselling a number of first-year students; and the supervision of the theses of more than twenty 4th year students.

Conducted evaluation and research activities in the context of two multi-year, multi-million dollar NSF-funded projects. Both projects focused on UIC Fellows who worked with mentor teachers in urban and suburban public schools to enhance students’ experiences in and understandings of science and mathematics. In these projects I was responsible for data collection (interviews), data analysis, and offering advice, suggestions and assistance to Fellows and Principal Investigators on issues regarding research, as well as for creating and maintaining a database for research data. I also participated in the meetings with Pis, and I contributed to writing the research and evaluation part for the NSF grant proposal of the newly funded project. Using data from the graduate students' yearlong journaling we have started a series of studies. The first study focused on graduate students' curricular conceptions as portrayed through their reflections on events, actions, and issues they noticed in their work in urban secondary classrooms, and how these conceptions relate to both their prior experiences and the projects and activities they pursued in classrooms (Christodoulou, & Varelas with Wenzel, under review).

Role and Contribution

2004-2005: Research Assistant, 2005-Present: Project participant at no cost. Contributed to writing the research and evaluation part for the NSF grant proposal. Responsible for data collection (interviews), data analysis, and offering advice, suggestions and assistance to Fellows and Principal Investigators on issues regarding research, as well as for creating and maintaining a database for research data. I also participated in the meetings with Pis. Using students’ yearlong journaling from the first round of the GK-12 project we have started a series of studies. The first study focused on graduate students' curricular conceptions as portrayed through their reflections on events, actions, and issues they noticed in their work in urban secondary classrooms, and how these conceptions relate to both their prior experiences and the projects and activities they pursued in classrooms (Christodoulou & Varelas, 2009).
