Dr. C.Karatzios/NY Times 06/30/11

1) You forgot to post this one of mine for NYTimes DATED June 30, 2011:

Dear Editor(s),

I would like to comment on Mark Mazower's OpEd on Greece and its economic problems (June 29, 2011, Democracy's Cradle; Rocking the World). He takes the reader on a historical journey of Greece, which points to its global geopolitical importance. However, I take issue with his statement that the Greco-Turkish population exchanges in the 1920's were a model for future such actions by the Nazis.

This is wrong. The mutual and agreed upon exchanges were supervised by the League of Nations and culminated in the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923. Hitler used the Turkish persecution of the Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians of Asia Minor and Pontus from a decade earlier as the model for the Holocaust. Only Turkey disputes this.

On the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum the following inscription by Hitler to his Wehrmacht commanders is inscribed:

"Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"

Sincerely,

Christos Karatzios MD
