RE: ACCREDITATION OF ENGINEERING SCHOOL OF “NORTHERN CYPRUS”
Dear Dr. Sussman,
It is with grave concern and disappointment that we have recently learned that ABET may be in the process of accrediting the newly established Engineering School at the “Eastern Mediterranean University” located in the occupied area of northern Cyprus.
Exactly 37 years ago to this date, the Turkish army invaded and brutally occupied some 40% of the northern part of the island-nation of Cyprus, with thousands of casualties and missing innocent Cypriotes, destroying churches, stealing of private property, creating tens of thousands of refugees in their own nation, and by general admission resulting in dire consequences for the peoples of Cyprus, both Greek and Turkish alike.
It is our understanding that the subject university is situated on STOLEN private property! For this reason alone, but also for reasons of human decency and justice, ABET should REFRAIN from even entertaining the idea of its accreditation. It is rather ironic that the subject university’s foundation are built on top of the spilled blood of thousands of innocent Cypriotes, and now ABET is considering to bestow recognition to such deception and injustice!
As someone involved with Engineering Education and with the Engineering profession in the US for more than 40 years, and for the above outlined reasons, I strongly urge that you review ABET’s position on this and for ABET refrain from getting involved with, and potentially giving credibility to this false institution.
